Knights of Columbus Meeting September 21, 2017.
7:50 PM meeting called to order.
Officer role call – Not present were: warden (Chris Kitt), lecturer (Dec. Tom Schenk), advocate (Joe Fernandez), and financial secretary (Steve Rodrigues).
Merlin Weise made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes; seconded by Marty Herrmann; motion passed.
The last District meeting was at St. Boniface in Waukee. It was apparent that we do as much as larger councils and even more.
Paul Martin gave the financial report: $18,340 in checking, $15,000 in CD. Tootsie roll proceeds: $4,900 (included in checking) – $350 in expenses and 10% will go to K of C state organization. $4,000 is our proceeds. Scholarship money: $7,500 was donated, and $2,000 has been paid out. $5,500 scholarship funds remain, and are included in checking. The $7,500 scholarship donation was directed to be used over 5 years ($1,500 per year).
We received a thank you card from Kellie Markey for allowing her to speak to us at the previous meeting.
$2,200 was paid to Mike Nieland family. We received a thank you. We talked about renewing Mike Nieland’s K of C membership. Currently he is on the roster of a Cedar Rapids council.
We discussed how to distribute the Tootsie Roll PID funds. It was agreed to spend 50% on Special Olympics, 25% on “On with Life”, and 25% on Easter Seals. Motion was made by Travis and seconded by Joe Henkels. Motion passed.
Larry Spellerberg talked about 3 upcoming dates for K of C breakfasts (October 1st (pancake), November 12th, and December 3rd).
Parish bike ride is planned for this Sunday; 1 PM in Woodward at the park near the football field.
We talked about different possibilities for a donation to Dorothy’s House it was decided to give $1,000 for now. Dale made a motion, and Paul seconded the motion; motion passed. Note that we were able to donate more than $500 at this meeting because this was approved at the previous meeting.
Kendal will not be able to attend out next meeting because of his job.
Fish shack construction is moving forward.
Our K of C insurance agent Charles Stastny has moved on to a different career.
Joe Henkels talked about plans for another Joppa Christmas Party. There will be 2 food lines to make things run smoother. We will need more people to staff the lines. Drake University is sponsoring 3 tiny houses. Intervision’s Clinic fundraising dinner is this Saturday night.
Dale Lemoges needs help with peeling apples Monday night 6-630 for Catholic Women’s Club pies.
David Gisch is running for City Council in Grimes. He would like our prayers for him and his family.
