Why are We Raising Money
We are raising money to support brother knight, Anthony Welch, who will be joining the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in early September. Read Anthony’s story below.
Anthony is the son of Ken and Theresa Welch, parishioners here at Assumption church in Granger. He grew up in Des Moines, and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 2008 and then attended Benedictine College where he studied Theology and Philosophy graduating in 2012.
While in college he joined the group FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. Being part of FOCUS transformed his faith, and helped to develop a personal relationship with Christ and His Church. As Anthony prepared for graduation he knew that he wanted to work with FOCUS, and “give back” to the organization that gave him so much.
For the past two years Anthony has worked as a full-time Catholic missionary with FOCUS. This work has sent him to New Jersey and Virginia where he led men in bible studies, and mentored/trained them to do the same with their peers. FOCUS then took Anthony to Comayagua, Honduras where his group helped catechize Catholics living in rural mountain villages; and also to Kolkata, India where they served the poorest of the poor and worked alongside Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.
All of these experiences have helped Anthony discern a call to join the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFRs). This fall, Anthony and eight other men will enter a ten-month period of discernment with the Friar community in New York. During this time they will live the life of a friar and live according to their constitutions, but have not yet professed vows. This time of discernment is the first step in joining the community and becoming a friar.
Use of Fundraising Proceeds:
Unlike priests who attend the seminary as young men with the financial support of their local parishes and the diocese, Anthony chose a different path and financed his own education. However, before he can join the Franciscan Friars, he must first take a vow of poverty and that starts with paying down his remaining college debt. The money raised will be donated to the Friars and earmarked for Anthony’s benefit.

About the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal:
Taken from the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal Constitution – “The primary mission of our community is a wholehearted embracing of Jesus Christ and our Holy Father St. Francis. Through our commitment to prayer and contemplation, the study of Sacred Scripture, and our fidelity to the Church and the Sacraments, our fraternal life, and our generous service to others, especially the poor, we receive nourishment necessary to live out our lives as sons of St. Francis in the Capuchin tradition.”
