July 2017 Minutes
Knights of Columbus Meeting July 20, 2017.
7:35 PM meeting called to order.
Officer role call – Not present was: lecturer (Dec. Tom Schenk).
Shannon Godwin made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes; seconded by Travis Risvold; motion passed.
Tony Slack agreed to serve as deputy grand knight. Thank you Tony!
Chaplain’s message (Dec. Dennis Wright): Dennis told us that he is very proud to be part of this organization and thanked us for all we do.
Dave Nixon is PID Tootsie Roll drive chair. Travis will help as co-chair. It was suggested that we invite others from the parish to help during the PID Tootsie Roll Drive and Hot Rods and Hogs which are happening at the same time. We will also need Knights to distribute Tootsie Rolls for the PID drive at the Iowa State Fair August 19th from 3-9 PM.
Paul Martin gave the financial report: $13,695 in checking, $15,000 in CD, $1,700 in liabilities (state dues, flowers for Mother’s Day).
Steve Rodriguez passed out remaining “Into the Breach” books.
Thank you from the youth group for supporting their efforts preparing Mother’s Day Flowers supporting their NCYC trip.
A parish bike ride/picnic outing is planned for Sunday, September 24th from 12-4 PM. The planning committee is: Shannon Godwin, Paul Houser, Merlyn Wiese, and Sam Smith. The event will be held at the Woodward City Park. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and brats will be served (dinner at 2:30). Cost will be $5/$10 to be determined. Cost will include a free T-shirt. Proceeds planned to go to youth group. The bike ride is 6 miles round trip from Woodward to the bridge; 12 miles round trip from Woodward to Madrid.
Joe Henkels talked about “tiny houses”. There are 50 houses planned for, and so far, funding for 34 houses is pledged. Joe wants us to consider supporting 3 houses. Each house costs $6,500.
Ken Wiley gave a 4th degree report. VA Hospital therapy garden update: Working on funding for “freedom rock”. The rock (estimated to be ~14,000 pounds) will be transported from Fort Dodge area to the VA Hospital. Loading and transport of the rock is taken care of. They need $500 as a down payment for “Bubba” Sorensen to paint the rock.
Installation of officers will be at the September meeting.
Shannon Godwin talked about Hot Rods and Hogs. The event is planned for August 5th. We will be serving pork, baked beans, cold slaw, and corn. The proceeds will be donated to Mike Nieland. Mike is a member of our parish who is dying from leukemia and the family has substantial need.
Dave Nixon talked about the PID Tootsie Roll drive concurrent with Hot Rods and Hogs. We need Knights to volunteer for shifts during the 8 AM – 6 PM drive at both Casey’s in Granger and Fareway in Grimes.
Fred and Diane Tiernan are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this Saturday. Help is needed in the kitchen. Contact Cindy Godwin.
NCYC – Cathy Davidson has requested funding for ½ of 1 adult cost. Dan Marry made a motion to support this request. Joe Henkels seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Dave Watznauer described the proposed fish fry shack. The request is for $1,500 funding for the fish fry shack. This was the second meeting discussing this funding. Shannon Godwin made a motion to fund the fish fry shack, Marty Herrmann seconded the motion. Motion passed.
Ken Welch communicated that Brother Pierre Giorgio thanks us for the $500 donation of coffee. Instant coffee is being used as donations to the homeless, and brewed coffee is being used in the Fransiscan Friar’s house.
Dec. Dennis Wright told us that there is a widow in the parish that is in need of help with a dead tree removal. We will help with this as the weather cools down. Joe Henkels suggested a widows list so that we can keep tabs on them to determine what needs they may have.
