Chaplain Report
-Deacon Tom…As Knights, we’re called to worship, veneration, and prayer. Adoration is something we do with God, belonging to Him and Him alone. Sometimes as Catholics we get sidetracked by Protestant friends because we’re seen as Worshipping Mary…and it’s not Worship, but veneration and honor. Mary is the Mother of our Lord and deserves highest veneration and praise.

Old Businesses:
-Deacon Tom: Granger Daze breakfast will be Sat, Sept. 22. We are still going to serve…Troy asked what the committee liked to have, and Tom said whatever the Knights want to serve.
-Father Remi: Will there be a Knights’ (12130) float in the Granger Daze parade? Tom said we think we’ll see involvement from political entities, schools, etc…so yes there will be a parade and we’ll see what/how we want a float to be. The group generally agreed we should do a float, and we agreed that Tom should just sign us up when the opportunity arises.
New Business:
-Scholarship program: Goal is to formalize the scholarship program while keeping with the tradition and the Council’s stipulations in the past. Deacon Dan: Now that we’re moving from 8th to 10th grade, we need to add a requirement that the applicant is a confirmed, active, visible member of the Parish who participates and shares in Assumption activities.
Father agreed with this.
Fred Tiernan says that we have always been discriminating about who is selected—“if you don’t make yourself available to work within our walls, to worship here, you won’t be considered.” There was a discussion over how many recipients we should give it to. Dave Redig asked why the amount can’t be divided between the worthy candidates, whoever they are—one one year, five another. Fred and Tony pointed out that the committee members are Father, Fred, and Tony—and “sometimes all (applicants) qualify, and some that never see the inside of the Church.”
Deacon Dan pointed out that no one disagreed with the idea—but that so many things aren’t “codified”—a max per candidate (500 bucks? 3000 pot split between whoever?). Tony pointed out that it depends on the checking acc’t, year to year—and that perhaps the Council should empower the Committee by OK’ing what can be afforded each yr and letting the committee make a decision.
Dan Merry felt that the idea was to codify the process….that there’s X amount out there, for X level of student from Assumption.
John Sims feels that this scholarship should be for someone who’s going to work for it, who’s earned the money because we’ve worked to get it too. Dan Merry pointed out that this is a one-time shot, and that lower amounts really only pay for books “which can be 500 bucks or more.”
Dave Redig noted that if a motion WERE to be made, could it be worded that they get a max of 3K with a floor of 500 per student? Joe Christiansen asked that the floor could be 1k? Fred pointed out that in yrs past, they’ve held onto the money if the students applying aren’t quality candidates.
Dan V added that he enjoyed how we have commended past recipients for their deeds, in Mass, and made a significant deal of it. Tom said we ought to put something on paper, he likes the 1K limit, if we’re flush with cash we can give more…but the rules are good for bookkeeping purposes. Deacon Dan asked if we budgeted a number; Dan M said we just carried the amount from last yr over as it wasn’t really discussed.
Dave Redig moved that “for the fall 2012 scholarship we allow a max of 3k, with a min of 1k per student, with the committee having discretion as to how best use the funds.” Tony Slack seconded, APPROVED BY COUNCIL.
-Fish Fry’s….Dave Watznauer discussed the need for a concrete pad in back for the Fish Fry’s. The School is going to put a concrete slab in behind the building for a preschool playground, as part of their compliance with the State (for Preschool accreditation).
However, when they pour the concrete it’ll be hard for us to improve the area where the Fish is fried for the fish fries. It’s muddy and (as Joe C pointed out) it can be dangerous. We need about 5 yards of concrete, and it will cost about 500 in concrete for our end (the school will take care of theirs, although they need help getting it poured).
Deacon Tom asked why Dave (and also Dave Redig and Dave Nixon) couldn’t do some fact finding and see what we’ll need (cost, materials, etc). Father clarified that this wouldn’t need approval of the building committee or the Parish.
Good of the Order
-Keep some Knights and parish members in our prayers, says Fred Tiernan…PJ Manning (fighting cancer, 4th degree Knight and Council member)….Donnie Manning (Parkinsons, among other issues)…Bob Manning (farm accident on Easter, had 350 stitches in his face and an artificial eye socket)…Fred McKibben…let’s keep our brothers in our Prayers.
-Also: Say the Rosary daily, as Knights it IS OUR DUTY.
